NANZ, NEUNER AND COMPANY GREEN-HOUSE ESTABLISHMENT. Henry Nanz bought 30 acres of land from Jacob Nicklies in 1872 to use for greenhouses in which to grow flowers and vegetables to sell in their downtown Louisville retail store. Eventually, 30 greenhouses were built near the intersection of Breckenridge Lane and Willis Avenue, near the current location of what is now Nanz & Kraft Florists. The greenhouses were gone by the 1940s, victims of commercial and residential development. (David Kraft.)

BAUER GROCERY AND TAVERN, 1895. Probably the most prominent business in St. Matthews before 1900, Bauer & Bros. Grocery and Tavern was a two-story brick building erected in 1871 at the northeast corner of Chenoweth Lane and Shelbyville Road. It was originally built and run by Henry Holzheimer, but the Bauer brothers—Louie, John, and Henry—acquired it in 1887, and the family ran it until Prohibition went into effect in late 1920. In 1921, the building was remodeled and became the Bank of St. Matthews. (BGSTMHS.)
